5 Santa Barbara beach areas

The residences along the oceanfront in Santa Barbara can be divided into five separate areas, not including Hope Ranch (which can be viewed here) or the Santa Barbara beach condominium complexes (which are discussed below).

As you go up the coast, the Santa Barbara beach areas are:

  • “Park-front” homes across from Shoreline Park
  • Oceanfront homes along Shoreline Drive
  • Oceanfront homes on the Mesa near the “Mesa Lane steps” to the beach
  • Oceanfront homes along Cliff Drive and Sea Ledge Lane
  • Oceanfront homes near More Mesa

Information about each Santa Barbara beach community follows.

Santa Barbara beach:

Shoreline Park-Front Beach Homes

There are 39 homes that are situated just across the street from the wonderful Shoreline Park and these “Park-front” homes offer beautiful ocean and park views.

Shoreline Park offers acres of green grass, walking and bike paths, abundant picnic tables and a beautiful playground.

Santa Barbara beach:

Shoreline Drive Homes

There are 28 bluff-top homes along Shoreline Drive, each with sweeping ocean and island views.

These homes do not have their own staircases down to the water, but instead access the sand by way of a staircase known as “One Thousand Steps” (which is a misnomer, although after climbing up it, one might think otherwise!)

Santa Barbara beach:

Mesa Oceanfront Homes

Further West, past a break in the residences due to a lighthouse, one comes to a part of Santa Barbara’s popular “Mesa” neighborhood along which there are 39 bluff-top homes and a great many non-oceanfront homes.

Only a couple of the oceanfront homes in this area have their own access down to the beach.

Most homeowners access the sand from the picturesque “Mesa Lane Steps.”

Homeowners in this area delight in their proximity to the “Douglas Family Preserve,” a 70 acre bluff-top park that abuts Arroyo Burro Beach, known to locals as “Hendry’s Beach” and the home of the very popular Boathouse restaurant on the sand.

Santa Barbara beach:

Cliff Drive Homes

Just past Hendry’s Beach, there is a string of 30 bluff-top homes along Cliff Drive, including four behind the gates of “Las Gaviotas” and eight behind the gates at Sea Ledge Lane.

Santa Barbara beach:

More Mesa Area

Finally, on the western edge of Santa Barbara, there are two private roads with oceanfront homes: Austin Road and Dorwin Lane.  Both of these roads have access to private gated stairways down to the beach.  Austin Road has 12 oceanfront homes, while Dorwin Lane has 6.

Homeowners in this area treasure in their proximity to “More Mesa,” a 300 acre bluff-top open space with miles of trails through native grasslands, natural wetlands, oak woodlands and meandering creeks.
